Born in the Soviet Union, his work is inspired by a curiosity about the natural world as pursued in the sciences. Pete’s visual investigations contemplate changing dynamics between natural phenomena and human activity. His practice is varied in material and approach but remains centrally rooted in exploring shifting conditions of the anthropocene. In his recent solo exhibition Dry Garden in the SF Arts ED gallery at Minnesota Street Project, Pete considers terrestrial forms as a form of sculpture, carved by variations of earth’s water cycles over geologic time. His practice weaves overlapping narratives across multiple dimensions ranging from painting to sculpture, time-based media and techniques that subvert perception. His current collaboration with Artist Lauren Hartman takes form of a short film Dream Resort in which video-based essay documents a dozen abandoned luxury resorts on four islands in the South Pacific (Huahine, Mo’orea, Bora Bora and Tahiti) and how nature’s patterns such as rising seas, pandemics and climate change continue to clash with human expansion and cultural hybridization.
